Who is complaining?

How many complaints come from each state, for each 100,000 residents?

When looking at complaint volume about a company or product, consider company size and/or market share. For example, companies with more customers may have more complaints than companies with fewer customers.

the complaint process does not verify the allegations in each consumer’s complaint narrative, nor can it, as a practical matter.

The CFPB complaint process does not verify the allegations in each consumer’s complaint narrative. This site shows no complaint narrative. A complaint is a consumer’s account of a problem. It is not a finding against the company.

In the 12 months to 2 Nov 2026, Mississippi had the largest rate: 6,745 complaints for each 100,000 residents.

Vermont had the smallest rate: 182.

The rate for the United States was 2,098.

The product category Credit reporting or other personal consumer reports is 91% of all complaints in the period.

Without that category, the rate for the United States was 188.

How were the figures made?

The state is the state that the consumer gave. The rates use the 2025 population estimates of the Census Bureau. The rate of a state can also reflect how many people there know the CFPB.

The largest category is the product category with the most complaints in the period, Credit reporting or other personal consumer reports. The column without it removes those complaints from the count of each state.

The national figure includes complaints from territories, from military addresses and from consumers who gave no state.

A program makes this page from the CFPB file with fixed sentence rules. The counts run through 2 Nov 2026. How the counts are made. Sources.
