Who Is Complaining?

About Who Is Complaining

Who Is Complaining is an independent public-data reference site. It takes the Consumer Complaint Database that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau publishes every day and answers one question for each of 1,361 financial companies: how many complaints have consumers sent the Bureau about it, about what, from where, and how did the company respond?

A second question sits beside the first on every page: how large is the company? A raw count says little without it. Where a company appears in a public size file (bank assets at the FDIC, credit union assets at the NCUA, mortgage filings under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act) the count is shown against that figure. Where it does not, the page says so plainly instead of leaving the count to speak alone.

What the site does and does not do

Independence and funding

The site is not affiliated with the CFPB, any other agency, or any company it lists. It is funded by advertising, which is labelled as such and kept apart from the data. Advertisers have no say over what is published, and no company can pay to change how it appears.

Accuracy

Every figure is computed by published rules from public files, rebuilt daily, and traceable to its source. The methodology explains each step, sources and licences lists every file used, and corrections explains how a company or reader can report an error. Questions go to hello@whoiscomplaining.com.
